What Are Sprockets?

A sprocket is a toothed wheel that engages with a chain (or a track/belt) to transmit rotational motion and power between shafts. Unlike a smooth pulley, the teeth on a sprocket mesh directly with the links of a chain, preventing slippage. Sprockets are widely used in power transmission and conveying systems — bicycles, motorcycles, industrial conveyors, agricultural equipment, timing systems, and automation machinery. They're typically made from steel, stainless steel, or engineering plastics, depending on load, speed, and environmental requirements.

How to Measure a Sprocket

To correctly identify or order a replacement sprocket, you'll generally need the following measurements/specs:

  1. Pitch – the distance between the centers of two adjacent chain rollers (or sprocket teeth). This must match the chain pitch exactly (e.g., #40 chain = 1/2" pitch).
  2. Number of teeth (N) – count the teeth around the sprocket; this determines gear ratio when paired with another sprocket.
  3. Outside diameter (OD) – the diameter across the outer tips of the teeth.
  4. Pitch diameter (PD) – the diameter of the theoretical circle passing through the center of the chain rollers when meshed.
  5. Bore/hole diameter – the inner mounting hole diameter (for shaft-mount sprockets), plus keyway dimensions if present.
  6. Hub diameter and width – if the sprocket has a hub for set screws or keyways.
  7. Overall width / number of strands – single, duplex (double), or triplex (triple) strand, which affects tooth width and spacing.
  8. Chain type/size compatibility – e.g., ANSI 40, 50, 60, 80, or metric equivalents (08B, 10B, 12B, etc.)

A quick way to verify pitch: measure across several teeth center-to-center and divide by the number of spaces, or match it directly against the mating chain's pitch.
