One Way Bearing
66 ProductsOne way bearing, also known as one way clutch bearing or sprag clutch bearing, is a vital component in many industrial applications. This bearing allows rotation in one direction while locking the bearing in the opposite direction to transmit torque. Its unique design and functionality make it indispensable in various mechanical systems.
What is a One Way Bearing?
A one way bearing is a type of needle roller bearing constructed from a drawn cup with needle roller clutches, which have a small radial section height. These one way needle bearings permit rotational movement in one direction while preventing motion in the opposite direction. This is achieved through a mechanism that allows the needles to roll freely in one direction but lock when the rotation reverses, thus transmitting torque efficiently.
The needles in one way bearings roll freely in one direction but lock to transmit torque when the shaft's rotation is reversed. Also known as drawn-cup roller clutches, an arrow on the lip indicates the rotational direction that locks the bearings.
Design and Construction
Needle Roller Clutches:
A one way bearing is compact, lightweight, and operates directly on a shaft. It is suitable for transmitting high torque. These bearings are available in standard and stainless steel, including OWC style one way bearings, EWC Hex one way bearings, and CSK Sprag Type one way bearings with keyway options for higher torque capabilities.
The miniature one-way clutch consists of a drawn cup, rollers, cage, and springs. The drawn cup, made of carburized steel sheet, has a unique structure with a protruding portion that serves as a stopper of rotation on the outside surface at the O.D. side, and a cam on the outer ring at the bore side.
Single-Row and Triple-Row Bearings:
- Single-Row Bearings: These 1 way bearings do not support loads from any direction and should be used with needle-roller bearings to support radial loads.
- Triple-Row Bearings: These support radial loads, making them more versatile for applications that require both one-way locking and load-bearing capabilities.
Materials:
- Bearings with 301 stainless steel springs handle higher temperatures than those with acetal springs.
- Some models include plastic springs or partially knurled outer rings for enhanced performance.
Applications of One Way Bearing
One way bearing is used across various industries due to its reliability and efficiency. Common applications include:
- Office Equipment: Paper movement in copiers, fax machines, and paper towel dispensers.
- Fitness Equipment: Ensuring smooth operation in exercise machines.
- Home Appliances: Reliable performance in various consumer appliances.
- Automotive: Utilized in two-speed gearboxes and rack indexing drives.
- Recreational Gear: Found in fishing reels, RC cars, RC helicopters, and RC engines.
Installation and Maintenance
Proper Mounting:
One way needle roller bearings are easily mounted with a simple press fit in the housing. Proper mounting ensures the final dimension and geometric accuracy of the outer ring, which is crucial for optimal performance.
Temperature Management:
For environments above 70°C, oil lubrication is recommended to maintain the efficiency and longevity of the bearing. One way needle bearing assemblies can typically operate within a temperature range of -30°C to 120°C.
Inspection:
Although the outer cup of the clutch is accurately drawn from strip steel, it can go slightly out of round during heat treatment. When the assembly is pressed into a ring gage or properly prepared housing of correct size and wall thickness, it becomes round and properly sized. Direct measurement of the outside diameter of a drawn cup assembly is incorrect. The proper inspection procedure is as follows:
- Press the assembly into a ring gage of the proper size as given in the tabular data.
- Gage the bore with the specified plug gages of the proper size, as given in the tables of dimensions.
- The locking plug is rotated to ensure lockup when the clutch is operated at low limit shaft and is mounted in a high limit housing strong enough to properly size.
One Way Bearing Benefits
- High Torque Transmission: Capable of transmitting high torque efficiently.
- Minimal Backlash: Transition from free motion to lock occurs with minimal backlash, ensuring smooth operation.
- Versatility: Available as clutch-only or as a clutch and bearing assembly, suitable for various applications.
- Durability: Designed to operate in a wide temperature range, providing long-lasting performance.
Conclusion
One way bearing is essential for numerous mechanical systems due to its unique ability to allow rotation in one direction while locking in the opposite direction. It can ensure efficient torque transmission and minimal backlash.
Whether used in office equipment, automotive systems, or recreational gear, one way bearings offer reliability, high torque transmission, and ease of maintenance.
