Recall Announcement

Proton Holdings, Malaysia’s national automaker, has announced a recall of 34,000 Proton Savvy minicars manufactured between 2005 and 2007. The recall affects vehicles sold in Malaysia, though the Savvy model has also been exported internationally.

The Cause of the Recall

According to Proton, the rear wheel bearings in the Savvy are vulnerable to water, dirt, and debris contamination due to improper seal design or bearing assembly. This contamination can lead to rust, premature wear, and ultimately bearing failure.

Proton’s investigations revealed that water ingress and corrosion have been the main causes of Savvy wheel bearing failures reported by owners.

Inspection and Repair Process

Proton is urging all Savvy owners in Malaysia to bring their vehicles in for immediate inspection and possible stainless steel bearing replacement.

  • Inspection time: Approximately 20 minutes per car.

  • Repair action: Replacement of affected rear wheel bearings to prevent malfunction.

Customer Safety and Quality Commitment

The recall is part of Proton’s ongoing i.Care quality program, which involves random inspections of vehicles in the field. Proton stated: “The results from the most recent inspection brought to attention the possibility of water entry into the rear wheel bearings, which could lead to a malfunction of the affected components.”

Statement from Proton’s Managing Director

Proton Managing Director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir emphasized the company’s focus on customer safety: “The safety and satisfaction of our customers is a primary concern. As a precautionary measure, we are recalling all Savvy models for inspection and repair. We apologize to all Savvy owners for any inconvenience.”

Proton has faced ongoing criticism over quality control, with Savvy owners and drivers of other models previously reporting similar wheel bearing failures due to water contamination. This recall underscores the company’s attempt to address long-standing issues and rebuild customer confidence.
