Polyurethane rollers with bearings combine a polyurethane running surface with a bearing-supported rotating assembly. The bearing supports rotation; the outer layer contacts the track, belt, or workpiece. These rollers can guide, feed, or support parts when their construction matches the load and contact task.

The first choice is usually the mounting arrangement: a bore on a shaft, a threaded stud, or a coated cam follower. LILY Bearing’s polyurethane roller range provides the catalog starting point. Compare the complete assembly rather than selecting by outside diameter or bearing size alone.

Polyurethane Rollers with Bearings

How the Bearing and Polyurethane Surface Work Together

The running surface and the bearing do different jobs. A polyurethane cover can provide compliant contact, cushioning, or traction. The bearing allows the loaded outer assembly to rotate relative to its mounting. Some constructions coat the bearing outer ring; others use a separate hub or core containing one or more bearings.

For a typical radially loaded guide roller, the force passes from the workpiece through the cover and supporting construction to the bearing, shaft or stud, and bracket. A strong bearing cannot compensate for a damaged bond, excessive cover deformation, or a flexible bracket.

Use the drawing to establish what rotates, what remains stationary, and how the assembly is retained. A bearing dynamic load rating is not, by itself, an allowable continuous load for the coated roller.

Compare Three Common Mounting Configurations

ConfigurationHow it mountsWhat to verify
Bore-mounted rollerA shaft or pin supports the bearing inner ring. The outer assembly rotates.Bore fit, shaft retention, spacer contact, support spacing, and clearance around rotating parts.
Threaded-stud rollerA stud attaches the roller assembly to a bracket or frame.Thread size, engagement, mounting-face support, stud bending, and specified tightening procedure.
Polyurethane-coated cam followerA follower assembly runs against a track; the design may use a stud or a separate pin.Follower construction, track profile, contact width, alignment, edge loading, and assembly limits.

Bore-Mounted Rollers

Choose bore-mounted polyurethane rollers when a separate shaft or pin suits the mechanism. Confirm the fit and retention method from the selected part drawing. A sleeve or spacer should contact the intended stationary bearing surface without rubbing the rotating outer assembly.

Polyurethane Coated Bearings

Threaded-Stud Rollers

Polyurethane rollers with screw studs can simplify attachment to a bracket, but a threaded mounting does not automatically provide height adjustment. Eccentric adjustment requires a design that specifically includes that feature. Confirm access for tightening and sufficient clearance for free rotation.

Coated Cam Followers

Consider polyurethane-coated cam followers for a defined track-running task. Check the actual profile and load direction. A flat running surface is not interchangeable with a grooved profile, and bearing axial capacity does not establish the permitted force on a coating edge.

Match the Construction to the Contact Task

TaskTypical useAcceptance check
GuidingPackage guides, automated tracks, and workpiece positioning.Check running clearance, tracking, side force, and edge contact.
FeedingSheet, film, or component handling.Check slip and marking with the actual mating material and contact force.
SupportingConveyor or transfer mechanisms.Check load sharing, cover deflection, support stiffness, and long dwell periods.
Food-area packagingGuiding or supporting parts in a specified hygiene environment.Identify actual food contact, cleaning conditions, material documentation, and bearing protection.

Application labels do not approve a particular part. Food-area use, for example, does not establish food-contact suitability. Likewise, a roller used in an automotive assembly line is not automatically suitable inside a vehicle gearbox or wheel hub.

Check the Installation Before Loading the Roller

  • Identify the working axis and the stationary mounting surfaces on the drawing.

  • Confirm the shaft or stud dimensions, retention method, bracket support, and installation clearances.

  • Align the mating track with the intended contact surface. Avoid unintended contact at coating edges.

  • Keep tightening forces on the designated mounting surfaces. Do not clamp a rotating outer ring or cover.

  • For a press fit, apply mounting force to the ring being fitted; avoid transmitting installation force through the rolling elements.

  • Rotate the installed assembly by hand where accessible and safe, then perform the agreed machine trial under controlled conditions.

Use the manufacturer’s fit and tightening instructions. There is no single shaft tolerance or mounting torque that applies to all polyurethane rollers with bearings. A smooth unloaded spin confirms free movement, not suitability for sustained working load.

A Catalog Example: Read Dimensions Separately from Ratings

The LILY-PU68310-3 product page lists a 3 mm bore, 10 mm outside diameter, and 3 mm width, with a sealed ball-bearing construction and a polyurethane coating. These dimensions describe the installation envelope for that model.

Its coated-hardness field lists 65A–98A. Confirm the ordering grade, specified hardness, and tolerance for the supplied part. A catalog range is not one measured hardness and does not establish the performance of every available compound.

Request confirmation of complete-roller load, speed, and environmental limits. Do not assume that an individual catalog field describes the bearing, coating, and bond under every service condition.

Hardness, Seals, and Bearing Construction

Hardness helps describe indentation response. ASTM D2240 describes durometer testing. The number is not a direct load rating, wear-life prediction, or substitute for contact testing. Shore A and Shore D are different scales.

Evaluate compound, cover thickness, contact width, load, speed, and temperature together. For the underlying material distinctions, see polyurethane roller structure and key properties.

Seals and shields affect contamination protection and rotational resistance. They do not make the assembly automatically suitable for washdown or immersion. Check seal material, cleaning exposure, and corrosion resistance of the complete construction.

Different types of bearings suit different load and space requirements. Use the bearing actually specified in the roller drawing; do not assume that adding a different bearing type will increase the capacity of the cover, bond, or stud.

Maintenance: Follow the Supplied Construction

Inspect the running surface for cracks, grooves, flat spots, embedded debris, and separation. Also check rotation, mounting security, and track alignment. Record changes against an installation baseline and set inspection intervals from duty and the consequences of failure.

Some sealed bearings are supplied prelubricated for their intended service; other constructions require relubrication. Follow the supplied instructions for lubricant, quantity, and access. Do not grease the polyurethane running surface as routine bearing maintenance or prescribe oil mist solely because the application runs fast.

Bearing replacement is possible only when the construction and service instructions permit it. Integral coated-bearing designs and separate-hub rollers may require different repair methods. Replacing a bearing will not restore a damaged polyurethane cover or bond.
